Thanks to Cape Town’s title of World Design Capital 2014, design events are booming this year. The opportunities for South African designers to put themselves out there, sell merchandise, complete their collections and learn with like-minded people are definitely growing. Ensure you get in on the action this year by getting your dose of design at one of these events:
Design Indaba Expo
Based in Cape Town, the Design Indaba Expo is taking place from the 28 February – 2 March 2014 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Design Indaba provides a platform for both seasoned and novice designers and businesses to showcase their creative work.
GUILD International Design Fair
Happening at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, from 27 February – 9 March 2014, the Guild International Design Fair is the accumulation of the work in many international and local galleries within Africa, South America, USA, Britain and Europe. Upholding unique and flawless design, GUILD is aimed at inspiring with talks and workshops as well as supplying collectors with one-of-a-kind exhibitions.
Year after year the Homemakers Expo has helped many homes receive a fresh wave of inspiration and 2014 is no different. This year the expo is set to happen in Cape Town at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 4 – 7 September. We had such a great time at the 2013 Cape Town Homemakers Expo displaying our security gates and burglar bars that we’ll definitely be returning this year, so come over and say hi to our Shutterway team this year if you plan on attending.
Maboneng Township Arts Experience
Join in for this eclectic festival that turns township homes into art galleries in Imizamo Yethu (February/March) and Gugulethu (October/November).
Infecting the City
For creatives with no boundaries, this street festival is open to dance, art, music and performance, connecting people with a love for the Cape. Cape Town will be the focus of this imaginative energy, which will include everything from live drama, to videos and art collections. It takes place on 15 March 2014.
Cape Town Carnival
On 15 March 2014, along Cape Town’s Green Point Fanwalk, this important and fun event brings design to life in a way that shows the public its true worth in job creation and functionality.
Decorex South Africa
Decorex is one of South Africa’s biggest showcases of design and décor. It takes place in Cape Town on 25 – 28 April at Cape Town International Convention Centre. It’s considered one of the top residential, product and office design exhibitions around. We’re excited to be part of the action this year, so if you’re in Cape Town between 25 – 28 April come and visit our Shutterway stand.
CCDI Winter Market
From 5 – 8 June 2014 at Cape Town’s Castle of Good Hope, Kamers Vol Geskenke and the Cape Town Institute of Craft and Design come together to present and develop local talent.
Design Storming is a creative brainstorm that draws in thinkers, community members and professionals to try to formulate solutions to the challenges that face the Cape in terms of how better design can serve its residents. Design Storming kicks off on 30 June 2014 in Khayelitsha.
Open Design Cape Town
Eliminating exclusivity, Open Design Cape Town is a festival open to everyone: “design is for sharing” is its motto. Running from 20 – 31 August 2014, it’s a wonderful opportunity for anyone to share their design event with the public. Anything from exhibitions, talks and workshops to pop-up shops, conferences and parties can be enjoyed in the Open Design line-up.
Design Policy Conference
The Design Policy Conference is a collective global brainstorm, bringing together design concepts that are shared and discussed with delegates from around the world. The event is scheduled for 22 – 23 October 2014.
Red Bull Doodle Art Competition
Aimed at art students drawing on the spot for 1st prize, the Red Bull Doodle Art Competition will take place in Cape Town this October in the Grand Parade. Rumour has it that these finals will include a piece of technology never witnessed before on the continent.
In October the Muizenberg Festival will fill the streets of this southern suburb of Cape Town. The event was formed to showcase the creative approach to uplifting this vibrant and emerging suburb.
In a venue that’s yet to be confirmed, from the 21 – 29 November 2014 the Cities Exhibition showcases the art, function and practicality behind designing cities, including work from over 20 locations, such as Asia, Africa and America.
On 30 November 2014, this symbolic event will be used to pass on the torch of the World Design Capital from the winning city to its successor.
